At Rice University, dining teams are piloting an AI-powered food scanner in the Seibel Servery to better understand and reduce food waste. The system allows students to weigh leftover food and share feedback, helping dining teams align production with actual demand.
This pilot highlights a growing shift across higher education: using real data to move from guesswork to precision in food operations.
With technology from Metafoodx, kitchens can track consumption and waste down to the menu-item level, giving operators the insight they need to forecast better, reduce overproduction, and run more efficient kitchens.
We’re excited to see innovation like this happening on campus and proud to support dining teams working to cut waste while improving the student dining experience.
