Closing the Gap Composting Can't See
Composting programs track what gets thrown away. They don't show why food was left over in the first place, and they miss waste that never reaches a plate, like prepared food held in warmers or chillers that goes unused. Metafoodx's platform closes that gap. Piloted at Rice's Sid Richardson College commons, the system combines two data streams: students scan their plates before scraping food waste into the compost bin, while AI separately analyzes unused prepared food left on serving line trays. Together, these streams give dining staff visibility into both diner-side waste and kitchen-side overproduction, information that end-of-service tracking alone tends to miss.
