Metafoodx in SaaSTake: Linking Kitchen Waste to What Gets Cooked Next

SaaSTake published a feature this week on how food waste tracking software for commercial kitchens is changing, and how Metafoodx connects what a kitchen throws away to what it cooks next. Our Director of Marketing, Charlotte Anthony, spoke with SaaSTake about freshness alerts, accurate weights, and using consumption data to plan prep. You can read the full feature on SaaSTake.

Why Kitchens Are Looking Past the Leftovers Bin

Food costs keep climbing. The National Restaurant Association estimates that average restaurant expenses rose 36% between 2019 and 2026. At the same time, ReFED estimates that U.S. restaurants and foodservice operations generated 12.5 million tons of surplus food in 2024, and nearly 70% of it was plate waste.

Knowing how much food went in the bin is only part of the picture. To change the outcome, kitchen teams need to know what was made, what guests actually ate, and what should change for the next service.

Tracking Every Pan From Prep to Plate

With Metafoodx, a team member scans each pan before it goes out for service, which takes about two seconds. The platform records the menu item, its temperature, and the net food weight. When the pan comes back, a second scan shows how much was served and how much was left.

Reports break this down by menu item and include a photo from each scan, so chefs can see which dishes are regularly made in larger amounts than guests eat, and which ones run short.

Freshness Alerts During Service

The first scan also starts a freshness timer for that pan. When the holding window set for that dish ends, an alert prompts staff to check the pan according to their holding procedures. A Timer Log and a daily Freshness Alert Rate help managers spot patterns by dish and time of day.

At Eaping Fresh Chinese, freshness alerts fell about 30% between September 2025 and March 2026, as the team began cooking smaller batches during quieter hours. Restaurant Technology News covered their results last week.

Accurate Weights Come First

Good decisions depend on good data. In a study of three healthcare kitchens and one hotel kitchen, staff recorded about 30% less food waste than researchers measured. Metafoodx uses an empty-pan weight check to set a baseline, so each scan reflects the actual weight of the food.

Today's Consumption Shapes Tomorrow's Prep

Consumption data feeds forecasts for prep quantities and ingredient ordering, and dashboards help teams time replenishment during service. Measurement-based programs have shown results elsewhere too: a 2025 study of five European foodservice sites reported food waste reductions of 23% to 51% at four of them.

Metafoodx is a food operations intelligence platform that captures the food journey from prep to plate, so foodservice teams can lower food cost, produce more accurately, and prevent waste before it happens.
